Benetton has a New Chairman

Luciano Benetton will hand over the helm of the Italian fashion clothing company he helped found 47 years ago to his son this week, he said in an interview published on Sunday.
Benetton and his family turned the company into one of Italy's best known brands with more than 6,500 stores in 120 countries and a reputation for controversial advertising and bold colors.
After 25 years on the Milan Stock Exchange, Benetton recently took the controversial decision to go private.
At the end of March, Benetton’s controlling shareholder, Edizione holding, said it had 92.4pc of the retailer after buying out minority shareholders.
In the interview, Benetton said his 48-year-old son "Alessandro Benetton" had shown in the two years as deputy chairman he had the passion needed to run the group, now more than 90 percent controlled by the family.“We have been a little distracted with the privatisation but the heart of the company remains the Benetton Group,” he added.

Decline of Haute Couture

The term “Haute Couture” is one that is tossed around quite often when discussing high-end fashion and clothing, but what exactly is it? The direct translation from French is “high sewing” or “high dressmaking” referring to the creation of exclusive custom fitted clothing. Haute couture is made to order for a specific customer, and it is usually made from high quality, expensive fabric, and hand sewn with extreme attention to detail with the use of time consuming, hand executed techniques that one must be highly trained in.
The number of couture houses decreased considerably over the 20th century, from 106 in 1946 to a mere 18 in 2000. By January 2002, at the time of Yves St. Laurent’s sad departure from the fashion industry into retirement there were only 12 couture houses left. In 2003 and 2004 famed designers Donatella Versace and Emanuel Ungaro stopped doing couture shows respectively.  2005-2007 there are 11 official members of the Federation Francaise de la Couture. Those members are Adeline Andre, Anne Valerie Hash, Atelier Gustavo Lins, Chanel, Christian Dior, Christophe Josse, Franck Sorbier, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Maurizio Galante, and Stephane Rolland.
How long until the Federation Francaise de la Couture is gone for good? The exclusivity of the Federation means enhanced values to the status conscious consumer but those who can and still choose to wear Haute Couture are an aging clientele. Even extremely wealthy younger women, who could in theory afford couture, often find ready-to-wear clothes more practical, wearable, and fun.
Because of that there is no way that Fashion Houses can rely on Haute Couture for their main income. For most houses, their twice-yearly Haute Couture shows lose them money. ). By 2007-2009 there were only 9 high-ranking couture houses: Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Gaultier, Lacroix, Mori, Sirop, Scherrer, and Torrente. The listing has been in considerable flux in recent years.By 2010- 2012,the only remaining design houses from those days of grandeur still in operation are Givenchy, Dior, Chanel, and Gauthier. Givenchy opted to have a ‘presentation’ this year on their premises and not a full fashion show.

The Qoute of the Day

I think the idea of mixing luxury and mass-market fashion is very modern - wearing head-to-toe designer has become a bit passe. It's a new era in fashion - there are no rules. It's all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together.

Raf Simons is the New Creative Director for Christian Dior

Following more than a year of speculation, French fashion house Christian Dior finally announced April 9 that Belgian creator Raf Simons has replaced John Galliano as the label’s creative director, with the former Jil Sander designer telling The New York Times’ Suzy Menkes he is aiming for a “very modern Dior” when he presents his debut line at Paris Couture Week this July. But with the designer adding that he plans to “also look back” and take inspiration from the 1947-1957 period of the fashion house, Relaxnews considers the label’s past creative directors and their contribution to the Dior aesthetic.
Raf Simons (born 12 January 1968) is a Belgian fashion designer. He studied Industrial design, but after a few years of self-study, he became a menswear designer in 1995.
