American author of more than 50 books, passes away after a stroke.
Maurice Sendak didn't think of himself as a children's
author, but as an
author who told the truth about childhood. Sendak gained international acclaim after writing and illustrating "
Where the Wild Things Are." In the world of children's picture books, where cute and cuddly know few limits, the author and illustrator was neither but brilliant never the less.
His final book, "Bumble-Ardy", was published eight months prior to his death.
“There must be more to life than having everything.”
― Maurice Sendak
